Identifying Long-term and Short-Term Goals

  • What is it you want to do after you graduate? Who are you now? - And who do you want to become? Formulating your goals goes hand-in-hand with developing your educational and career plans.

    Wherever you are in the planning process, here are some useful resources to know about:

    • Self Assessment Career Services has a range of assessment tools to help you clarify your strengths, weaknesses, values and beliefs
    • Skills Assessment Learning Assistance Programs can help you assess your learning and study skills, and strengthen the skills that will help you achieve your goals.
    • SU Undergraduate Learning Objectives See where and how your own goals reflect the broader vision Seattle University has for its students.
    • Your advisor can be a good sounding board; sharing experiences, raising questions, and helping you to clarify goals.

    Reflection Questions

    The following questions are intended to prompt some reflection on the direction you want your educational planning to take. Answers to some of these questions may affect your planning from the outset. Other questions will require some research or will take time to answer and you will want to return to update information as you continue on your educational course at Seattle University. Think of your plan as a long-term project that you work on over time. It isn't as important to know all the answers at this point as it is to be mindful of these important questions.

    • How did you arrive at your choice of major?
    • What experiences or opportunities do you want at SU that will help you to grow in your abilities, clarify your purpose, and/or achieve your goals?
    • How have your academic interests evolved since arriving at SU?
    • What have you learned about yourself so far including strengths and areas you would like to work on or improve?
    • What do your intend to focus on in your major: have you identified an area of concentration?
    • What are your current career interests; how do you expect to explore these interests and plan for life after SU through your academic and extra-curricular pursuits between now and the time you graduate?
    • If you anticipate continuing your studies following graduation, what form of post-graduate study seems most likely?
