National Jesuit Alumni Day of Service

  • Thank you to those who joined  Seattle University and our fellow Jesuit institutions to serve the community and foster equality at the National Day of Service 2013Jesuit Alumni Day of Service on April 26th.  We hope you'll join us next year.

    This event was sponsored by the Seattle University Alumni Association and Magis: Alumni Living the Mission.

    The National Jesuit Service Initiative seeks to foster the ongoing formation of men and women for others. The initiative engages graduates across the nation in shared service that demonstrates the life-changing and enduring power of a Jesuit education.

    2014 Service Sites and Descriptions

    The Foodbank at St. Mary’s

    The Food Bank at St. Mary’s offers food assistance to families in Seattle through both a walk-in program and home delivery program.  Volunteers will distribute food, check-in clients, and sort food items.
    Children aged 7-15 are welcome when accompanied by parents.
     
    St. Francis House (This site has reached capacity)
    the University of San Francisco and Seattle University
    St. Francis House provides basic essentials like bags, backpacks, clean clothes and references to community services for the homeless, mentally ill, veterans and the working poor in Seattle. Volunteers will organize donations, deep clean the hospitality space and assist with landscaping.
     
    Alleycat Acres (MLK + Cherry) & Alleycat Acres (22nd & Union)

    Alleycat Acres is an urban farming collective that works to convert unused space in to community run farms with the mission of reconnecting people, place and produce.  Volunteers will  plant at the two sites as well as prepare grounds for spring. This location welcomes children accompanied by their parents.
     
    Volunteer Chore Services

    Volunteers will provide assistance to elderly, disabled and low income individuals living in an apartment building near Seattle University. We will provide “spring cleaning” level housework, including kitchen, bathroom, living room, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, laundry and other cleaning to a group of residents who are unable to keep up with housework due to their medical conditions and/or age.
     
    Nature Consortium

    This location is in the West Duwamish Greenbelt located in West Seattle. Volunteers will remove invasive species, mulch, and plant native plants and trees in Seattle’s largest remaining forest.
     
    Recovery Café (This site has reached capacity)

    Volunteers will work outside to beautify the parking lot and surrounding dirt beds along the Café exterior, help to organize the storage room and deep clean breakout rooms in the Café.  This location welcomes children accompanied by their parents.
     
    St. James Cathedral Kitchen

    Help clean and organize the kitchen, which opens its doors five days a week to provide a nourishing, hot meal to those in need in our First Hill and downtown Seattle neighborhood. ThT

    *Attendees will be responsible for their own transportation to service sites. If you choose to serve at a site not within walking distance to Seattle University, please plan accordingly.
