Tomas Guillen, professor of communication/journalism, leaves for Cali, Colombia this month as part of the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program. Guillen plans to present several lectures on investigative reporting and journalism ethics, and meet with faculty to help them in the creation of a graduate program. Guillen is returning to a country he knows well. He was in Colombia in 1985 as a Seattle Times reporter to cover the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz, a volcano that killed 27,000 people. Guillen’s story on the tragedy can be found by visiting Tomas Guillen and clicking on “A Volcano’s Toll.” The senior specialist program provides short-term academic opportunities for U.S. faculty and professionals.
