  • Seattle University Debate Team has Strong Showing at National Tournament

    The Seattle University Debate Team took three teams to the national tournament held in Burlington, Vermont April 4 and 5. The teams were comprised of James Kilcup (Senior) and Sophia Sanders (Sophomore), Nick Hendricks and Robert Birungi (Sophomores), Michael Flores (Sophomore) and Ben Watts (Freshman). The tournament had 125 teams from all over the the nation and globe which included Yale, Harvard, Middle Temple, and Cambridge. After eight rounds, James and Sophia advanced to the semi final round where they competed against Hart House, Harvard, and Vermont. The SU team took 3rd in a close 5-2 decision for Harvard. SU finished third American team overall and fifth international team overall. Harvard went on to win the championship in the final round.     The SU Debate Team is administered by the Communication Department in the College of Arts and Sciences. The debate coach is Ross Merritt, a part-time faculty member in the department. Ross is the key person directing the team while Jeff Philpott, a full-time faculty member in the department, acts as the faculty advisor. Ross does the coaching, logistical arrangements, and travels with the team to tournaments. For more information about the debate team, please contact Ross Merritt.
