English Professor John Bean and his wife Kit, M.A. class of '93, are heading to Ashesi University in Accra to conduct a series workshops for faculty. During their weeklong stay, they will focus on curriculum assessment, critical thinking, establishing a writing-across-the curriculum program, and best teaching practices. John and Kit Bean had conducted a similar program in Bangladesh in 2008.
Ashesi was started in 2002 by a former Microsoft employee. The private independent school integrates liberal arts into its major programs in computer science, information systems, and business. Most students come from Ghana and other African countries. The majority remain in Africa after they graduate.
Kit Bean received her master’s degree in adult education and English as a Second Language and teaches composition at South Seattle Community College.
John Bean, who received his Ph.D. in English from the University and Washington, joined the faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1986. His research and scholarship focus on composition, pedagogical theory, rhetoric, Shakespeare, and Renaissance literature.
The College of Arts and Sciences, the largest college in Seattle University, offers 33 undergraduate and 7 advanced degrees.
