Our department offers two of the most popular and challenging majors on campus. Because our discipline lies at the heart of the University's Core curriculum, every undergraduate student has taken or will take classes with our faculty. We are passionate about our teaching, scholarship, and creative endeavors and invite you to join our diverse learning community.
English Literature: B.A. and minorEnglish Creative Writing: B.A. and minorFilm Studies: B.A. and minorWriting Studies: minor
In our department, our majors share and exchange their critical and creative ideas with others in hopes of becoming and remaining thoughtful and active citizens – of the university, nation, and world. Knowledge and competency are the first goals of a university education.
The English major has two concentrations from which you may choose: Literature and Creative Writing. Both tracks cultivate critical thinking and composition skills, close-reading and textual analysis, methodological awareness and theoretical sophistication, historical breadth, and social awareness.Choosing to become an English major at Seattle University means choosing to become an active and sophisticated reader – of texts, history, and culture. From such critical reading comes engaged, incisive, and graceful writing that is capable of contributing to both traditional and contemporary discourses – from poetics to politics.
Film Studies at Seattle University gives students a disciplinary knowledge of film as an art form – its history, aesthetics, craft, genres, and great directors – and it situates film in its global context with studies of cinemas all over the world. Because we live in an image-dominated culture, we need to acquire the “visual literacy” required to understand, critique, and use moving images intelligently and creatively. Students especially interested in digital filmmaking can study screenwriting and film production, and undertake off-campus film projects and internships in Seattle, one of the most vibrant film communities in the nation
These majors will prepare you for graduate study, teaching, journalism, advertising, and marketing, government, business, law, and many other fields.
