  • Madeleine went to Maryknoll School in Seattle. Her mother and sister died when she was young, and she lived with her father in Seattle. She was a nursing student at Seattle University when the war broke out. Though forced to leave Seattle, she was offered the opportunity to finish her nursing degree in Colorado in 1941-1942.

After graduation, she accepted a position at the blood center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and moved there. She located near downtown Milwaukee, where she met and married her husband, Tom (Toshio) Uyehara. Her brother Peter also moved to Wisconsin and made Milwaukee his home as well. She had one son, Thomas P. in 1950. Madeleine and Tom eventually moved to the north side of Milwaukee, where they built a home.

Once married, she decided not to work and was a stay-at-home mom. She was active in the community and with church and school activities throughout her life. She was very caring and touched many lives with her kind words and her beautiful smile. She died in 1986.
