On Sept. 1, 2010, James St. Center, better known to Seattle University faculty and staff as "The Little Blue House," was reduced to a pile of rubble. The building, which was vacant since last year, previously had been used by some members of University Advancement. The controlled demolition, which took a few hours, was particularly cheered by the staff who worked within its sometimes rat-infested walls. While the university's longterm plans for the site are still being worked out, in the more immediate future the property will accommodate the trailer that will support the construction of the new rec center.  

 

Seattle University presented Groovin' on the Green, the first-ever Concert Community on Aug. 28, 2010. Neighbors joined with faculty, staff and students for an afternoon of free live music and refreshments. The university, which collaborated with Jackson Street Music Project to produce the family-friendly concert, hopes it becomes an annual event.  

 

On Aug. 25, 2010, about 100 employees of Seattle University participated in Staff and Faculty Service Day. The second annual afternoon of service was organized by Human Resources in collaboration with the Center for Service and Community Engagement with support from university leadership. Participants fanned out to assist nine community organization's in the neighborhood. Afterward, they cooled off with some ice cream on the Union Green.  

 

On Aug. 20, about a month before the Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons is scheduled to open, construction workers were putting the finishing touches on the largest project in Seattle University history. Meanwhile, boxes and boxes of books were being delivered from the Interim Library on 13th and Columbia to be shelved in their new home. Overseeing this mammoth task is librarian Mary Sepulveda. She took a few moments to explain to The Commons how the process is going.  

 

Seattle University was the site of the Green Innovation in Business Network's Solutions Lab 2010. Representatives from a diversity of industries and organizations participated in a dialogue on sustainable practices. Bon Appetit, Seattle University's food service provider, helped organize the gathering. In this video clip, SU Executive Vice President Tim Leary welcomes the group and speaks about the university's commitment to sustainability.
