Students grade SU

Honoring courage

UriGraduation_WCNearly seven decades after she was forced to abandon her SU education when she was incarcerated in an internment camp, Uri Matsuda received an honorary degree from the university. Unable to attend this year’s undergraduate commencement, Matsuda formally received her diploma and celebrated her SU graduation among family and friends on Aug. 17. She is pictured here with School of Law Professor Lori Bannai. Bannai and Dale Watanabe of the International Student Center, who appears in the background, were instrumental in the conferral of SU degrees to Japanese students like Matsuda who were incarcerated during World War II. Youngquist is Nepal-bound

LindseyYoungquist_WCLindsey Youngquist, a 2011 magna cum laude biology/pre-med graduate, is heading to Nepal on Aug. 15 to study medicine as a recipient of the prestigious Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship. Youngquist was profiled in The San Juan Journal.

SU welcomes commish

KarlBenson_WCKarl Benson, commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), was interviewed by Jen Mueller of ROOT Sports in SU’s O’Brien Center on Thursday. Benson was visiting SU, which will join the WAC next year. In a live chat on the Seattle Times, the commissioner praised SU for its history and tradition, and said, “We expect Seattle U to have immediate success in the WAC.” Click here for sights and sounds from the June 14 press conference at which SU announced its decision to join the WAC.
