    What does life after graduation look like for you?  For some, life after graduation has newly started. It may be a return home, working a part-time job as you discern graduate school, traveling internationally, doing a year of service, or reconnecting with friends and making new ones. You just left school and you are okay with that! For others who graduated five, ten or twenty years out, you may be juggling a career and/or family, trying to figure out what a life of service might look like, wanting to re-engage with your alma mater, and perhaps even taking your leadership to the next level by mentoring a young person who might consider a Jesuit university for their education. And, for those who have been long out of the university for some decades, it can be a quest to find that volunteer project that is “just right”, increasing time with family, searching for work that will bring about meaning in this phase of life, or looking toward your Jesuit university to offer some new learning opportunities.

    Wherever you might lie in the continuum, how are you staying engaged with your Jesuit alma mater, program, or community? This season, many alma maters are hosting their homecoming, alumni and family weekends, or reunions. We know there will be a lot of fond memories revisited and new ones made. So, we invite you to post a picture on our Facebook page showing how you are staying connected to Jesuit education. We bet you are all doing great things and what better way than to share it! Post an image and we will enter you to win a Magis free t-shirt. We want to see your pictures of volunteering, retreating, serving in the community, with your favorite Jesuit, mentor or mentee, or learning and acting for justice.
     
    On another note: now that fall is here and your calendar is filling up with so many busy opportunities, why not make space for some quiet time to get away, rest, and reflect? Magis is gladly taking registration for the Ignatian Silent Retreat happening the weekend of November 9-11, 2012. Please see below for more details. Lastly, we encourage you to also save the date for the Justice Education Forum: A Teach-In on Economic Justice being held on Saturday, December 1, 2012. We are excited to bring you a new format which will offer a deeper experience of the topic at hand, with an opportunity to learn, share, and act.

    Laugh and grow strong is an Ignatian phrase that captures the Collins’ family approach to life. As this month’s featured Alumni Living the Mission, the Collins family shares their perspective of how Jesuit education has shaped them into a family which finds God in all things. From working and studying at Jesuit universities, to choosing graduate programs in social work and disability advocacy, not to mention moving to Bolivia for a year to volunteer with Maryknoll Lay Missioners, Kathy, Bill, Sheila and Katie have made a commitment to be of service to others. As they note “We have been able to laugh, grow strong, and also challenge and encourage each other on our individual journeys.     Service Saturday at St. Mary’s Food Bank

    Come together with other Jesuit-educated alumni to serve at St. Mary’s Food Bank in Seattle’s Central District. St. Mary’s Food Bank provides nutritious food to families and individuals who are struggling with hunger through a variety of services, including the Walk-In Program, where over 6,700 people receive groceries each month. Alumni Volunteers assist with distribution of food, checking-in clients, sorting food items, and participating in a short reflection following service. If you are interested in serving as a Service Saturday volunteer or Alumni Leader, please email Magis. We are taking sign-ups for September 2012 - June 2013. Alumni family and children welcome, however, volunteers must be 16 years of age or older, and accompanied by an adult.

    Justice Education Forum: A Teach-In on Economic Justice

    The presidential election is just around the corner. Are you one of the many asking “How is this economic reality ever going to change?” Explore ways to be an agent of change as a Jesuit educated alumnus/na by joining Magis for the Justice Education Forum, an annual program that gathers leaders from different sectors for in-depth discussion and exploration of current topics of social justice. This December, Magis will bring you a teach-in experience filled with opportunities to hear from experts and organizations that are doing good work around the theme of economic justice. Connect with other Jesuit-educated alumni and community members who have a desire to learn and put that learning into action for justice. A full schedule of workshop presenters covering a wide range of topics related to economic justice will be available in the coming weeks.     Ignatian Companions: Small Group Spiritual Direction
    Mondays, November 2012 to May 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

    Join a small group of 4-7 people committed to accompanying and supporting one another for the purpose of cultivating attention to God at work in prayer and daily life. This is a group spiritual direction process, and will be guided by an experienced facilitator in the Ignatian tradition. There will be one facilitator per small group, either Steve Wodzanowski (Pastoral Associate, St. Joseph Parish) or Marilyn Nash (Campus Minister for Ignatian Spirituality at Seattle University). Each evening will typically include communal prayer, ritual, check-in, deeper sharing, reflective listening, and silence. Group members are expected to have an active prayer life, experience with Ignatian spirituality, a willingness to articulate the fruits of their prayer, and an openness to listening carefully to oneself and others.     This quote by May Sarton seems appropriate as summer is waning and fall seems to be upon us. From the sunny stretch of summer, with its rejuvenating and creative energy, we search for practices that give shape to an everyday rhythm that fall is so well known for. What practices do you have that set you into the fall rhythm? What do you consider to be holy?  Perhaps it’s waking up early on these crisp mornings to drink hot coffee or go for a run. Or maybe you are harvesting vegetables from seeds planted back in spring.  Maybe it’s seeing children off as they go back to school, bringing a sigh of happiness (or relief!) as they return to their own practice of learning and growing. For others, it may be the excitement of pulling out the calendar to save the date for ways to connect with community – meals with loved ones, favorite Magis programs, weekend explorations – chances to engage, serve, share or learn together. All these 'practices' connect us to the rhythm of fall.

    Among all the opportunities this season, Magis invites you to some meaningful ways to engage your Jesuit education. For one, Magis is eager to announce that the application deadline for Mexico Mission Trek has been extended to September 15th. A small community of Jesuit-educated alumni will share the experience of working side-by-side with a family to build a home, connecting justice education through reflection before and after the trek.  If any part of you is curious or stirred, we hope you will apply for this unique service opportunity!

    Also, Service Saturdays are starting back up this month at St. Mary’s Food Bank. If you haven’t been able to go in the past, we highly encourage you to sign up for a Saturday for one of our ten spots per month. Make new friends, meet our community, and feel like you are making a difference to someone – you'll encounter first hand the diversity of all those served by this ministry. And don’t forget: Magis Mixers have moved to first Thursdays at the ElysianBrewery. The Magis staff would love to meet you, learn more about what you have been up to since graduating from a Jesuit university and celebrate a head start to the weekend together… we’ll also make sure you know what Magis is up to and how you can get involved.

    Lastly, if you are looking to kickstart your season, consider the annual Ignatian Silent Retreat at the Palisades Retreat Center. Magis knows this retreat is a favorite to our alumni community, as it is a chance to take in the beauty and wonder of the Puget Sound in prayer and reflection.

    Jesuit education can impact a person well beyond years spent as a student. Alumnus Mark A. Flynn (Saint Louis University 1967, 1972) credits Fr. Tom Cummings, S.J. (president of Rockhurst High School in Kansas City where his sons attended high school), with part of his formation. Fr. Cummings poignantly said “a talent is not a gift until it is given away”. This line has stuck with Mark through all the many personal and professional experiences he has had since.     Mexico Mission Trek: A Global Immersion Program for Jesuit-Educated Alumni

    Sunday, November 18 – Saturday, November 24, 2012
    Tijuana, Baja California (Mexico)

    Mexico Mission Trek aims to build a community experience for a group of sixteen Jesuit-educated alumni who will engage in a short-term service immersion with a community in Tijuana, located in Baja California, Mexico, via Esperanza International, a non-profit agency which “cultivates global citizenship through international service experiences in working toward a better world.” Alumni participating in Mexico Mission Trek will work together for one week alongside the community in Tijuana in order to bring about a sense of being men and women for and with others; engage in social analysis and conversation on some of the critical issues impacting the local community, broaden the scope of understanding on the current realities brought about by Mexico/U.S. relations, and reflect on the experience of service with the community in Tijuana and with each other post-Trek exploring a faith that does justice.     Alumni Seminar Series, Fall 2012: Learning from the Past

    This fall, members of the Seattle University History Department kick off discussions addressing the lessons we can learn from the early Greeks up to the tragedies of the past 200 years.  Taught by Seattle University faculty and special guests, the Executive and Alumni Seminars are open to Seattle University alumni and other college graduates in the Seattle area who seek a high-quality learning experience, stimulating discussions of life's deeper questions, and the companionship of other active minds.  The cost of the six-session seminar, which includes texts, teachers’ stipends, parking, and refreshments is $240.  Please indicate when you apply if you will need reserved parking on campus for the six sessions (the cost is already included in the tuition).  To register by September 15, 2012 click here or email Alumni Seminars .
