Peter Ely moved to Seattle from the East Coast at age eight and lived there until his entrance to the Jesuits at Sheridan, Oregon in 1956. He obtained undergraduate and masters degrees from Gonzaga University in 1962 and 63, a Master of Divinity from St Mary’s University in Halifax Nova Scotia in 1969, and a doctorate in theology from Fordham University in New York in 1974. Archbishop Thomas Connolly ordained him to the priesthood in June of 1969. From 1973-1996 Fr. Ely was a member of the faculty at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA with an interruption of two years to serve as pastor of St Joseph’s Parish in Seattle. From 1978-1990 Fr. Ely served as academic vice president of Gonzaga and from 1992-1996 he was rector of Gonzaga’s Jesuit community. After one year (1996-97) as president of Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO Fr. Ely came to Seattle University to teach systematic theology. From December 2001 until July 2008 he was rector of the Arrupe Jesuit Community at Seattle University. Fr Ely has been Seattle University’s vice president of mission and ministry since July 1, 2009.
Marie Gehman is the Administrative Coordinator for the Office of the Vice President for Mission & Ministry, and Father Peter Ely, S.J. Marie has worked for Seattle University since 2007, most recently as the Operations Coordinator for the nursing skills lab. Marie has a BA in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Central Washington University and taught for Seattle Public Schools and the Renton School District. She is currently persuing her MBA at Seattle University.
