Seattle University has named Deanna Sands as the new dean of the College of Education. Dr. Sands is currently a professor and associate dean of research and professional learning at the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver. She brings to SU a distinguished career as a teacher, scholar and administrative leader and comes from a university that shares our commitment to educating the whole person. Dr. Sands will officially join SU on July 1.

This is an exciting time in the history of the College of Education,” says President Stephen Sundborg, S.J. “With the opening of Middle College High School at SU this past fall, as well as a number of other new and proven programs and initiatives, the college is connecting with the wider community as never before. With the arrival of Dr. Sands, a demonstrated leader in creating and sustaining partnerships, these efforts will be even further strengthened.”

Deeply dedicated to diversity and inclusive education, she has devoted much of her career to enhancing educational opportunities for people with disabilities. An active and prolific scholar, her research has been supported by grants from such esteemed entities as the Institute of Education Sciences and the National Science Foundation.

As associate dean, a position she has held since 2006, Dr. Sands has expanded CU Denver’s collaborative research with community partners, enhanced faculty mentoring initiatives, forged ongoing partnerships with school districts and led the school’s doctoral faculty through a new Doctorate of Education program in Leadership for Educational Equity. In 2011, she served as interim dean.
