Seattle University recently broke ground on its new Fitness Center, which is scheduled to be completed by September 2011, in time for the 2011-12 academic year.

The 21,000-square-foot Fitness Center will adjoin the Connolly Center. With a cost of approximately $10 million, funding for the project was raised during the university's recently completed capital campaign, which raised a total of $164 million.

The new Fitness Center is yet another capital project undertaken by the university in its commitment to enhance the social and campus life experience of all students, faculty and staff. The expansion will be followed by a renovation and reprogramming of the existing Connolly Center footprint to provide new benefits for Athletics. The enhancements come on the heels of an aggressive initiative to upgrade and maximize the university’s indoor and outdoor Athletics facilities.

More than $1 million dollars of renovation projects were completed during the summer of 2010, including a new drainage system and natural grass turf for Championship Field, the renovation and dedication of the Nancy Gerou Women's Basketball Locker Room, a complete re-flooring of South Court and numerous upgrades for both the east and west swimming pools.

The Fitness Center will include cardio training, weight training, group exercise studios, fitness assessment, staff offices, locker rooms with shower facilities and outdoor recreation equipment.

The mission of the Seattle University athletics department is to champion the holistic development of student-athletes, inspiring a vital and engaged campus community through the development and maintenance of a premier, nationally prominent NCAA Division I athletics program in the spirit of the Jesuit tradition.
