SU Officially in the Western Athletic Conference!

It has been 33 years since Seattle University competed within a Division I conference, as the 1979-80 academic year was the final one for the program in the West Coast Athletic Conference (now the West Coast Conference). Now, starting today, July 1, 2012, Seattle U has a new home, as the Western Athletic Conference welcomes SU as one of its newest members. 

The WAC is the sixth-oldest among the nation's 11 FBS (Division I-A) conferences. The league was established almost 50 years ago, as Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming came together July 27, 1962. Since then, many schools have called the conference home for a period of time, including San Diego State, UNLV, TCU, Fresno State, and Nevada.  

In 2012-13, Seattle U will be one of 10 full members of the conference, joining current members Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State as well as fellow newcomers Denver, UT Arlington, UTSA, and Texas State. The Redhawks will compete for championships in 17 different sports within the league as follows:

  • Men's and Women's Cross Country - Championship Meet Only - Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 - Ruston, La. - All teams compete
  • Women's Soccer - Regular Season and Tournament Titles - Tournament takes place Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 1-4, 2012 - Logan, Utah - Top 6 of 9 qualify for tournament
  • Volleyball - Regular Season and Tournament Titles - Tournament takes place Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 19-21, 2012 - San Antonio, Texas - Top 8 of 10 qualify for tournament
  • Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field - Championship Meet Only - Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 21-23, 2013 - Albuquerque, N.M. - All teams compete
  • Women's Swimming and Diving - Championship Meet Only - Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 27-March 2, 2013 - San Antonio, Tex. - All teams compete
  • Men's and Women's Basketball - Regular Season and Tournament Titles - Tournament takes place Tuesday-Saturday, March 12-16, 2013 - Las Vegas, Nev. - All teams compete
  • Women's Golf - Championship Tournament Only - Monday-Wednesday, April 22-24, 2013 - Mesa, Ariz. - All teams compete
  • Men's and Women's Tennis - Regular Season (Men) and Championship (Both) Titles - Tournament takes place Thursday-Sunday, April 25-28, 2013 - Denver, Colo. - All teams compete
  • Men's Golf - Championship Tournament Only - Monday-Wednesday, April 29-May 1, 2013 - Henderson, Nev. - All teams compete
  • Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field - Championship Meet Only - Wednesday-Saturday, May 8-11, 2013 - Arlington, Texas - All teams compete
  • Softball - Regular Season and Tournament Titles - Tournament takes place Wednesday-Saturday, May 8-11, 2013 - Ruston, La. - Top 6 of 8 qualify for tournament
  • Baseball - Regular Season and Tournament Titles - Tournament takes place Wednesday-Sunday, May 22-26, 2013 - Grand Prairie, Texas - Top 8 of 10 qualify for tournament

Seattle U's first competition within the Western Athletic Conference will be Thursday, Sept, 13, 2012, a home volleyball match against New Mexico State. There will be a rundown on GoSeattleU.com of the other members of the WAC leading up to that match.
