Seattle University will welcome best-selling author Erik Larson as undergraduate commencement speaker and CEO Emeritus of Providence Health & Services Dr. John Koster will address the graduate class in ceremonies June 16 at KeyArena at Seattle Center.

Erik has written a number of critically acclaimed books, including his most recent bestseller, In The Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and An American Family in Hitler's Berlin, about the first American ambassador to Nazi Germany. He wrote the bestselling The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America, which compellingly recounts a series of murders committed during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, as well as The Naked Consumer: How Our Private Lives Become Public Commodities and Lethal Passage: The Story of a Gun.

The Seattle-based author began his career as a journalist, working as a contributing writer for The Wall Street Journal and Time. His work has appeared in numerous national magazines including The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Harper’s.

John Koster, MD, is CEO Emeritus of Providence Health & Services, a position to which he was appointed shortly after announcing his retirement in early 2013. Joining Providence in April 1997, Dr. Koster was primarily responsible for system operations before he became president and CEO in 2003.

Koster is frequently included among the 50 most influential healthcare executives by Modern Healthcare and this year he was 20th in the nation. Under his leadership, Providence has continued its commitment to the communities it serves, especially the poor and vulnerable. Last year the system provided $823 million in community benefit and charity care to improve access to healthcare. This year, Providence was recognized among the top 20 best-performing systems in the country in Thomson Reuters’ annual rankings.
