     Social Justice Immersion Focus on Youth 

    Seattle University is located in one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in the entire Northwest. Even though SU students spend four years going to school in this neighborhood, this immersion will allow you to experience your community in a completely different way! You will meet people from many different East African and Asian cultures, and learn about the gifts, challenges, and opportunities of growing up in the neighborhood. We'll explore the issues that youth in the neighborhood face, including language barriers, education, and gentrification. During the immersion, we will visit schools, community partners, do direct service, go on a scavenger hunt, and interact with the youth and families who call the Central District home.

    Limited to 10 students.

    List of Gear to Bring 

    Required 

    Students without the required gear will not be able to participate in the immersion.

    • A small object that represents why you choose to do service.
    • Sleeping bag and pillow we'll be sleeping on the floor. (If you don't have one, let us know)
    • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes. (Sandals and flip-flops will not protect your feet at our service sites.)
    • A lightweight waterproof jacket
    • Bring long pants to wear
    • Desire to serve and learn!

    Strongly Recommended 

    • Personal items toiletries, a towel, prescription medications (for current medical conditions, especially for known allergies).
    • Two sets of clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Please dress appropriate for work and conservatively as to respect the diverse communities you will be working with.
    • Second change of clothes: casual, warm, comfortable.
    • Snacks for yourself and to share, optional
    • Water bottle
    • Your campus card for Friday night and to get back into your residence hall

     

    Remember we all need to pack light. This is only a short trip and we have limited room in the vans. Please bring your own if possible. If you cannot, please let us know by August 30th.
