College of Nursing’s Assistant Professor, Karen Cowgill, PhD,
MSc, has been selected to participate as an Independent Review Committee member
for new proposals to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI).
The committee reviews proposals submitted by governments of countries eligible for
GAVI’s assistance in obtaining and delivering new and underused vaccines.
The GAVI Alliance’s mission is “to
save children’s lives and protect people’s health by increasing access to immunization
in poor countries”

Karen Cowgill is an infectious disease epidemiologist with
additional training in nursing and parasitology. She conducted her doctoral
research in Egypt on the association between hepatitis C virus and
non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, did a stint in the Philippines as part of the Polio
Eradication Initiative, and was an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer at the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She spent four years at the
Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) in Seattle working on clinical
trials of a vaccine to prevent leishmaniasis.
Karen is currently an Assistant Professor at Seattle
University's College of Nursing as well as an affiliate faculty member in the
UW Department of Global Health, and is collaborating on research related to
global maternal-child health.
