  • Retention-Focused Emergency Grants for Students

Students who leave Seattle University before they graduate often cite financial reasons for not completing their studies. For many students, a small grant can mean the difference between leaving or graduating.

Through the generosity of donors, the Office of Multicultural Affairs is able to make available retention-focused emergency grants for students. These one-time grants, which students do not have to repay, have a tangible impact on students' capacity to be successful at Seattle University.

When students come in to meet with OMA staff, we engage in a holistic conversation about their financial situation, as well as other things that might be impacting their academic progress (including bigger picture things like campus climate, relationships with peers and faculty, etc.).

We also talk with students about their budget planning, in order to see if they have a one-time need versus a more ongoing need that requires additional conversations and resources.

Awards have ranged in size from $74 to $1,500, depending on student needs. Their most common needs relate to costs for textbooks and food; students have also received grants to assist with housing and utility costs, childcare expenses, study abroad, family emergencies, and transportation costs.
