William J. Ehmann, Ph.D.

  • William J. Ehmann, Ph.D. joined the Provost’s Office in November 2012 as the Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Education. He provides leadership to the research and scholarly work of the university and advances our graduate programs by close work with the Deans and faculty. He is also charged with enhancing excellence in graduate education including admissions, academic policy, governance, fiscal management, learning outcomes assessment, the promotion of interdisciplinary programs of study and external collaboration, and services to graduate students.

    Dr. Ehmann graduated from the University of Notre Dame, and following a NASA Fellowship at Brown University, began his career as a research geologist with the U.S. Department of Interior. He later earned his doctorate in biology-ecology as a returning, adult learner at Utah State University, served as founding director of several environmental science programs and held tenured faculty appointments at Drake University and Plattsburgh State University. Most recently, he served as principal investigator for a $2.5M Title V grant to support Hispanic graduate student success and he maintains an externally-funded research agenda involving students and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
