to the Pre-Health Advising at Seattle University! Pre-health advising
is available to any Seattle University student who is interested in
studying health professions as well as prospective and current Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Professional Health Certificate Program
students. If you are interested in a career in the health professions,
we are here to support you.
worked in Health Professions Advising since 2005 in both California and Texas.
I am from a family of physicians and know how important good pre-health
advising is to your success with your future career goals. I enjoy working as a
pre-health advisor because I can have relationships with students as early as
prospective high school students all the way through young alumni starting
their careers after finishing their graduate/professional school programs and
beginning their careers in healthcare. In this position I get to wear many
hats: academic advising, career counseling, professional development, club
advising, admissions counselor, and life coach. The most important thing for
you to know is I am here for you. Motivated compassionate students such as
yourself are the reason I love what I do.
Since the economic downturn of 2008 we have seen the number
of people seeking careers in healthcare skyrocket, so now more than ever,
students need to be prepared and well-rounded before they apply. My goal as a
pre-health advisor is to help you along the path towards success. Sometimes
students have to take an alternative route to reach their goal. Sometimes
students’ goals change along the way due to any number of variables. Students should come see me at least once a
year, preferably once a term, but can come in as much as they need. We have
both scheduled appointments and drop-in hours every week. Students can come in
before registration to discuss pre-health pre-requisites they need to take.
Students may find it helpful for referrals to summer programs or clinical
opportunities. We also have a weekly email that goes out to remind students of
upcoming trainings, speakers, and events. To sign up for these weekly Pre-Health Announcements, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject "Subscribe."
When you come by the office you will get a chance to meet my
service dog, Doozy. She is part Shepherd (German & Australian) mixed with
Alaskan Husky (which is a mixed breed: Siberian Husky, Malamute, Collie, Grey
Hound, amongst others) along with apparently a splash of Bichon Frise (at least
that is what the DNA test says). She is very friendly and affectionate. Since
she works at a college I am ok with students saying hello to her, but if you
need to meet with me elsewhere we have a space set aside for that as well.
The Pre-Health Advising Office sponsors events throughout
the year. We have big events, like the Health Professions Graduate School Fair,
as well as smaller events like school admissions recruiters, alumni healthcare
speakers, and skills workshops for essay writing and interviews. Students are
never required to meet with their pre-health advisor, but we are here to help.
Let us know how we can assist you along your path.
I look forward to working with you.
